The name 30/30 comes from the lightning safety rule from the late 1990’s that states if you hear thunder within 30 seconds of seeing lightning then stay inside for 30 minutes. As a kid, I spent a lot of time in the Arizona White Mountains which included summers at a campground my grandparents camp hosted at. My grandparents would allow my brother, sister, and I to go fish by ourselves each day. I remember going to fish on multiple occasions when a storm was approaching and my grandma would always state, “If you hear thunder within 30 seconds of seeing lightning come back and stay in for 30 minutes.” We never followed this 30/30 rule, it was more like 3/30, but I remember the unique smells of the river right after it rained. It was green, spicey, citrus-like, slightly sweet, and very fresh. 30/30 was inspired by my time in the AZ white mountains right after a rain.
